Took my portable radio gear on a trip to Sarina Beach, 330km North of Rockhampton, and setup “Motel Portable” in a ground floor unit facing the beach, nice view! My setup was a bit compromised with only having 2 x 4 amp/hr gell cells to power my station, use one while the other was on charge! Setup the Buddistick on the Motel balcony railing and threw the kite winder out on the lawn, for the counterpoise! Spent the day calling a few stations on 20 metres with the occasional contact and later in the afternoon setup, on 40 metres for a listen. At about 0730z 10/08/08 I heard a station in Hawaii, NH7O Al, talking to some VK2, 3 & 4 calls on 7084 KHz, so I decided to make a few calls to him. At 0815z he acknowledged my call and he gave me a 5x3 report, I was receiving him 5x8! Not bad for a Buddistick leaning at 15 degrees, an FT-817 running a HL50B amp at about 20-25 watts, all powered by a 4 amp/hr gell cell! |
