This page is a basic overview of some digital modes, with some links and basic information to get you started. The great thing about some of these modes is that they work under less than ideal propagation conditions! Consider that some modes are suitable for VHF/UHF use, as well as HF.
There are 2 ways to go Digital, you can use a hardware solution such as an SCS, KAM XL, Timewave TNC, or run with a primarily software & PC soundcard based solution using programs such as DigiPan, MixW, MultiPSK, Ham Radio Deluxe, FLdigi etc. The software/soundcard route requires a small interface between your radio and PC which can be home built or, you can buy a unit ready to go. The most common units are the Tigertronics SLUSB, Rigblaster, Rig Expert and Navigator.
Whilst the TNC solution is a great way to go, particularly IF you want to run Pactor II or III (see explanation of the mode on my links page). Pactor is a great mode and offers the fastest data throughput on HF under very low signal conditions, however the cost is high. The soundcard route offers a lower cost path to enjoyment :-) with the Tigertronics SLUSB in the sub US$100 price range, if you choose to go DIY, its even cheaper!
Critical to the soundcard/software modes is the calibration of your soundcard, be it in your PC, if using a home built interface or using an external product like the SLUSB. The handy program for this is called checkSR.exe and is found within the program called MultiPSK.
Naturally, all these modes have their own spots in the digital band plans, by gentlemans agreement with some differences between the IARU regions. Some of the more common modes are RTTY, PSK31, SSTV, even APRS (using MultiPSK).
