The hobby of Amateur Radio offers lots of participation in diverse radio technologies. Modes of operation range from voice communications, morse code, data communications, sending pictures over radio (SSTV) and many others.
Communications ranges can vary from a few kilometres, to many thousands of kilometres, across the World. From the sand dunes of Namibia to the Arctic Circle you will find Amateur Radio operators, communicating!
Operation can be from the comfort of your lounge at home, or camped in remote mountain ranges, even on board an aircraft, or boat. If you can carry a radio & antenna to a location, you can operate!
You can choose to build your own equipment, depending on your level of expertise, or you can simply buy what you need. There are vast numbers of publications to help you research knowledge, not to mention the Internet.
There are Clubs you can join, and get to meet other fellow Amateurs and join in on the Club activities. Clubs also run regular News broadcasts, so you get to hear what else is happening in the hobby of Amateur Radio, both locally and in other parts of the world.
Regular Contests are run, for many modes, giving you an opportunity to try out your operating skills and the efficiency of your station.
Amateur Radio can be used in conjunction with other hobbies. Many Amateur Radio operators help out with communications at community events, car rallies, horse trail rides, fun runs, just to name a few.
All in all, Amateur Radio offers lots of fun & enjoyment!
